Dam Liners for North West Farms, Game Lodges & Mines
From the Marico bushveld to the maize triangle and the platinum belt, Damtech quotes and installs liners for game, stock, irrigation and process-water dams in North West.
North West sits between the Gauteng Highveld and the Kalahari, and the land dries out steadily as you travel west. The eastern half — around Brits, Rustenburg and Hartbeespoort — mixes irrigated vegetables, citrus and the platinum mines of the Bushveld Complex. The central maize triangle around Lichtenburg, Klerksdorp and Wolmaransstad grows maize, sunflower and groundnuts, while the west towards Vryburg and Mahikeng is cattle and game country on open bushveld. Across most of the province, water comes from boreholes and summer runoff rather than from rivers, so a farm or lodge dam that leaks is a direct loss of water that was either pumped at a cost or captured in a short rainy season.
LOCAL CONDITIONS
Climate & Seasonal Rainfall
North West is a summer-rainfall province, with most rain arriving as thunderstorms between November and March. Totals decline from the relatively well-watered east to the semi-arid west, and rain can be patchy: one farm may get a heavy storm while the neighbouring farm stays dry. Summers are hot, especially in the Bushveld and on the Kalahari fringe, so evaporation from open water is high from spring onwards. Winters are dry with cold nights and regular frost on the Highveld, which affects exposed pipes and fittings. Drought cycles hit the western districts hard, and stock farmers there plan around several dry years rather than a single bad season.
SITE FACTORS
Soils & Ground Conditions
Large parts of the province, particularly around Lichtenburg, Ventersdorp and Mahikeng, lie on dolomite. Dolomitic ground can contain cavities and is sensitive to concentrated water, so an earth dam that leaks there can contribute to subsidence as well as wasting water — site-specific geotechnical advice is needed before building. Around Rustenburg and Brits, dark swelling clays, often called black turf, shrink and crack in winter and heave when wet. Further west, deep red Kalahari sands drain very quickly, and calcrete layers can sit just below the surface. Each of these conditions calls for different preparation of the dam basin and anchor trenches before a liner is installed.
WATER USE
Irrigation & On-Farm Water Use
Irrigated farming is concentrated along rivers and schemes — the Hartbeespoort scheme near Brits, the Crocodile and Marico rivers, and the Taung area on the Harts River — where vegetables, citrus, lucerne and grain are grown under pivots and drip. Elsewhere, irrigation depends on boreholes pumping into balancing dams, often at night or whenever power is available, which are then drawn down during the day. A seeping balancing dam forces longer pumping hours and higher electricity bills for the same irrigated area. On dryland maize and sunflower farms, dams are used mainly for livestock, crop-spraying water and household backup rather than for irrigation. Shorter pumping hours also leave more capacity for other uses on the farm.
SECTORS
Agriculture, Mining & Industry
Platinum and chrome mining along the Rustenburg–Brits belt forms one of the country’s largest mining regions, and the Klerksdorp and Orkney area has a long gold-mining history; both generate process water, stormwater and return water that must be contained. Agriculture covers maize, sunflower, groundnuts, citrus, vegetables and beef cattle, with Vryburg well known as cattle country. Game ranching and wildlife tourism are strong, from the Pilanesberg and Madikwe areas to private reserves and hunting farms in the Marico bushveld. Lodges need dependable water for wildlife, guests and fire protection, often from dams fed by boreholes.
STORAGE
Water Storage Needs
Damtech has lined three earth dams at a game lodge in the Marico region of North West with 1 mm HDPE geomembrane, covering 2,098 m² in total, with the liner secured in perimeter anchor trenches — the project is described in our projects section. That work reflects common needs in the province: holding borehole water in game and stock dams, keeping balancing dams full for irrigation, and containing mine or wash water. HDPE suits larger earth dams, with thickness chosen per site according to depth, subgrade and animal pressure; PVC can suit smaller ponds; and corrugated steel tanks work where an earth dam is impractical. Costs depend on size, material and site conditions, which our dam lining cost guide covers in more detail.

Can a dam be built and lined on dolomitic land in North West?
Sometimes, but dolomite needs a geotechnical assessment first because leaking water can contribute to sinkholes. Where a dam is not advisable, a steel tank on an engineered base may be an alternative, although that also needs a site assessment.
Has Damtech lined game lodge dams in North West?
Yes. Damtech lined three earth dams at a game lodge in the Marico region with 1 mm HDPE, 2,098 m² in total. The project is described in our projects section.
Will lining reduce my borehole pumping costs?
Lining stops water you have already pumped from soaking into the ground, so less pumping is needed to hold the same level. The saving depends on how much the dam currently seeps and how the water is used.
How do black turf clays around Rustenburg affect a dam liner?
These clays swell when wet and crack when dry. The basin is prepared and compacted, and anchor trenches are detailed so the liner can tolerate slight ground movement. We assess the soil before recommending a material.
