PROJECT DETAIL

Overview

Pecan orchards need dependable irrigation water, especially while young trees establish and when nuts fill in late summer. This farm near Barberton in the Mpumalanga Lowveld needed its earth dam to hold water instead of losing it into the ground.

Requirement

The dam had to keep its stored water through the dry winter and the hot months before the summer rains. Seepage through the soil would have meant less water for the orchard exactly when the trees need it.

Our Approach

Damtech prepared the dam basin and batters to a smooth profile, then laid 1 mm HDPE geomembrane across about 1,000 m², welded the seams and anchored the liner along the crest.

OUTCOME

Result

The lined dam now holds water for the orchard, with about 1,000 m² of 1 mm HDPE sealing the basin and side slopes.

  • About 1,000 m² of 1 mm HDPE geomembrane installed.

  • Welded seams and crest anchoring across the dam basin and batters.

  • Seepage stopped, so more stored water is available for pecan irrigation.
